1-Methylpiperidin-2-yl)methylamine is a chemical with the formula CH3CH2NHCH2CH3. It is an alkaloid that is found in plants of the genus Anadenanthera. The molecule consists of two amine groups connected by a methylene bridge. 1-Methylpiperidin-2-yl)methylamine is used as a precursor to other drugs, including the opioid analgesic etorphine and the antihypertensive agent metoprolol. Deamination reactions convert this molecule into amphetamine and methamphetamine, which are addictive and illegal substances.
