Description:
2-Methoxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine is used in the synthesis of sulphonamides. It is an isomer of 4,6-dichloropyrimidine and 2-chloropyrimidine. The reaction of 2-methoxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine with sulphuric acid yields a sulphonic acid and hydrogen fluoride. This reaction can be reversed by the addition of a base such as sodium hydroxide. Reactions involving 2-methoxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine are rapid and complete within hours at room temperature. Spectra obtained from these reactions show bands in the region between 4000 cm−1 and 2000 cm−1 that correspond to C=N stretching vibrations from amines formed during the reaction. The rate of this reaction increases with increasing concentrations of amine and permanganate ions.
