Description:

5-Methyl-2-nitrophenylacetic acid (5-MPA) is a metabolite of the drug pentoxifylline. It is used as a screening tool for platelet aggregation and as a diagnostic agent for ketoacidosis. 5-MPA has been shown to be metabolized by arachidonic acid synthase in vitro, but does not appear to inhibit arachidonic acid synthesis or metabolism in vivo. It has been shown to have hypoxic effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of cyanide by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase.
