2-Mercapto-5,6-dimethylpyrimidin-4-ol (2MMP) is a metabolite of the drug sulfamethoxazole. It is found in urine samples and tissue samples of animals treated with this drug. 2MMP has been detected in human urine samples, but at lower levels than in animal urine. The majority of the metabolite is excreted unchanged in the urine, although some metabolites are formed by oxidation. The metabolite can be detected by mass spectrometry methods such as LC-MS/MS or GC-MS. The detection limit for 2MMP is 0.1 ng/mL in plasma and 0.1 ng/g in muscle tissue with validation using animal studies and gel permeation chromatography to determine the sample preparation methods needed for accurate detection.br>br>
