5-Methylthiophene-2-sulfonyl chloride (5MSCl) is a furan derivative that can be synthesized by the coupling of 5-methylthiophene with 2-chloro-1,3-dihydrobenzofuran. This heteroarylated compound has been shown to react with a variety of heteroarenes, including pyrrole, giving rise to novel functionalized products. The iterative nature of this reaction has led to the synthesis of a number of heteroaryl derivatives. 5MSCl also reacts with chlorides, leading to heteroarylations and cross couplings.
