4-[(Methylamino)sulfonyl]benzoic acid (4-MSBA) is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits cancer cell growth. It binds to the active site of the enzyme nitro reductase, which is involved in the conversion of nitrites to nitric oxide. 4-MSBA has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in culture and can be used for the treatment of various types of cancer including breast, prostate, colon, and lung. The mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated but may be due to inhibition of DNA synthesis, inhibition of protein synthesis, or interference with cell signaling pathways. 4-MSBA also inhibits cell growth by binding to chloride ions and chloroformates at the active site on enzymes such as oxindole synthase and amine oxidases.
