N-(Methylsulfonyl)alanine (MSMA) is a drug that inhibits the redox cycle. It has been shown to increase the anticancer activity of licofelone and to inhibit the production of prostaglandin, which may be due to its ability to inhibit inflammation. MSMA has been studied in clinical trials for cancer treatment, but it has not yet been approved by the FDA. MSMA also inhibits zileuton-mediated inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2, which is an enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators. The phenyl ring in MSMA disrupts the binding site on cyclooxygenase-2, preventing inhibition by zileuton and other related drugs.
