4-(Methoxymethyl)piperidine hydrochloride (4MPH) is a flammable, water-soluble, and volatile compound. It has the chemical formula CHNO and is abbreviated C8H17NOP. 4MPH is an experimental model of metabotropic glutamate receptors that have been shown to have a high affinity for chloride ions. In addition, 4MPH has been shown to stimulate the production of glutamate in vitro at concentrations that are not toxic to cells. The effect of 4MPH on the production of metabolites such as propionyl-CoA, trimethyl-CoA, or isobutyl-CoA in rat liver was investigated using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and found that it inhibits synthesis of these metabolites at high blood levels.

The structure of 4MPH consists of two amides: one with a methyl group attached to nitrogen and the other with methane sulfonate
