1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-benzimidazole is a heterocyclic compound, which is a nitrobenzene with an imidazole ring. It has been found to inhibit the transfer of DNA from one bacterial cell to another and may be useful in the monitoring of gene transfer. The nitro group can act as a nucleophilic reagent and react with anions such as sulfoxides, anilines, or iodides. This enables 1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-benzimidazole to catalyze reactions involving proton transfer. The nitro group can also undergo tautomerization when interacting with the imidazole ring, which causes it to change between two forms: one that is electron rich (nitro) and one that is electron deficient (amine). Nitration of the benzene ring can produce different compounds depending on what substituents are present.
