Methyl 1-methyl-5-oxoprolinate is an insecticide that belongs to the group of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. It has been shown to be effective against the tick, Amblyomma americanum. This compound is extracted from a methanol extract of Euonymus alatus leaves and has shown to have high affinity for 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, which may be due to its ability to inhibit serotonin reuptake, leading to increased serotonin levels. Methyl 1-methyl-5-oxoprolinate also inhibits fungus and can be used as an antifungal agent. It is also a potent insect repellent and toxicity was observed when it was applied externally on mice. This compound is converted into methyl ester and trioleate through enzymatic hydrolysis.
