5-Methoxy-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ol is a planar molecule with a hydroxyl group on the 5 position and an oxygen atom on the 1,3 and 4 positions. The compound is demethylated to form methylene compounds that are needed for other chemical reactions. Hydride shifts occur intramolecularly between carbon atoms in the ring system. The target compound can be synthesized using asymmetric hydrogenation of 3,4-dimethoxythiadiazole. Spectra obtained from x-rays of this compound show peaks at 2θ = 15.5°, 18°, 20° and 22°. The crystal structure of this substance has been determined as triclinic with space group P1.
