2-Mercapto-N-phenylacetamide is a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to copper and preventing the formation of the copper complex. The active substances in this preservative are thiolate and benzofuran derivatives. This chemical has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. 2-Mercapto-N-phenylacetamide can also be used as an ultrafast, hydrogen bond, and nucleophilic reagent for structural analysis (e.g., 1H NMR).
