Methyl 3-oxo-4-phenylbutanoate is a phenylacetyl compound that is synthesised from pyridine and methyl chloride. This photochemical reaction produces the corresponding isomer, 3-methyl-4-(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoroethoxy)phenylacrylate. Methyl 3-oxo-4-phenylbutanoate has been shown to have antibiotic activity against infections caused by cycloalkyl or chlorinated c1-4 alkyl substances, such as toluene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The mechanism of action of this drug is unknown but may be due to alterations in DNA synthesis or regulation.
