4-Methyl-1,2,3-thiadiazole-5-carboxylic acid is a phosphonate that activates the enzyme hydrazine hydrolase. Hydrazine hydrolase is an enzyme that breaks down the compound salicylic acid, which is found in plants such as echinochloa crus-galli and tobacco. Salicylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. 4-Methyl-1,2,3-thiadiazole-5-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth at bactericidal concentrations. It also inhibits the growth of resistant strains of Echinochloa crus galli and tobacco. 4MTCA has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
