2-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,3-thiazole is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CH2CH(NH)C6H5. It is a white solid that is soluble in organic solvents. The compound can be prepared by the reaction of piperidine with 2-methylbenzothiazole followed by hydrolysis. This reaction produces a mixture of 2-methyl-4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1,3-thiazolium chloride and 2-methylbenzothiazolium chloride. The ammonium salt of this compound has been used as a catalyst for dehydrating aliphatic aldehydes to their corresponding acids.
