Methyl 4-hydrazinobenzoate is a chemical that inhibits the activity of epidermal growth factor (EGF) by binding to its receptor. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in cell culture by binding to EGF receptors, which may be due to its ability to activate the intracellular mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Methyl 4-hydrazinobenzoate also binds boronic esters and iron chelating agents. This compound is also able to inhibit agaritine, a fungal metabolite that causes bladder cancer in rats. Methyl 4-hydrazinobenzoate was modeled using molecular mechanics calculations and was found to bind to the factor receptor in a similar manner as EGF.
