Description

Gestrinone is a progestin that was developed to be an oral contraceptive. Gestrinone binds to the progesterone receptor and inhibits ovulation. It is used in the treatment of endometriosis, a condition characterized by the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus. This drug also has a number of side-effects, including weight gain and fluid retention. Gestrinone may have been used as a diagnostic tool for infectious diseases, due to its ability to inhibit the replication of RNA viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).
