4-Methoxybenzyl hydrazinecarboxylate (MBHC) is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of acetylpyridine compounds. It is a sensor that detects changes in chloride concentrations by converting these changes into electrical signals. MBHC is used in the production of chloroformates, transition metal complexes, and other organic molecules for use in x-ray crystallography. The use of MBHC as a ligand has been shown to be stereoselective and oriented. The anion form of MBHC has been observed at high pH levels and it can be detected with anions such as chloride, nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, or bromide.
