2-Methoxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde is an amine that has been shown to be a potent anticancer agent. It is synthesized by the cross-coupling of 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenylacetonitrile with an amine. This compound has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by binding to DNA and inhibiting protein synthesis. 2-Methoxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde also induces the M2 phenotype in macrophages and induces the production of fluorescent ethyl cinnamate from dihydrobenzofuran. The cross-coupling reaction is photolabile, making it difficult to study the mechanism of this compound's anticancer activity.
