2-(2-Methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole (2-MPB) is a compound that belongs to the group of benzimidazoles. It is an efficient method for the synthesis of 2-MPB in acetonitrile. The crystallography of this compound was studied by X-ray diffraction and revealed that it has two dihedral angles, with the lowest energy conformation being a gauche conformation. This molecule has two chiral centers, which means that there are four different stereoisomers. The most stable isomer is the one with an R configuration at the 2 position. Sildenafil (Viagra), which is used for erectile dysfunction, also belongs to this class of compounds and has a similar structure to 2-MPB.
