4-Methyl-2-(phenyldiazenyl)phenol is a tetradentate ligand that can form complexes with transition metal ions. The coordination geometry of these complexes has been studied by crystallography and photoelectron spectroscopy, which showed that the ligand binds to the metal ion in a site-specific manner. 4-Methyl-2-(phenyldiazenyl)phenol can be used to synthesize model complexes of metal ions, which are important for understanding the reactivity of these ions. This compound is also an excellent starting material for other organic syntheses because it is easily converted into acetonitrile by reaction with sodium methoxide in methanol. Techniques such as silicon mediated reactions are also possible with this compound.
