Methyl 4-propionylbenzoate is a carboxylic acid with the chemical formula CH3COCH2CH(COOH)2. It is used in organic synthesis as an activated methyl ester, or as a building block for other organic compounds. Methyl 4-propionylbenzoate undergoes the Wittig reaction to form an amide, a suzuki coupling reaction to form a methyl ester, and can be chlorinated to form a chloride. This compound has been shown to be useful in the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals, including L1210 and doxorubicin. It also has potential applications in the production of cross-coupling reactions between functionalized organometallic reagents and terminal alkenes.
