- 4-Methoxy-2-butanone
4-Methoxybutan-2-one is a colorless liquid that has an odor similar to acetone. It is slightly soluble in water and insoluble in ethanol. 4-Methoxybutan-2-one reacts with magnesium oxide, giving rise to magnesium methoxide, which reacts with water to form hydrogen gas and magnesium hydroxide. The reaction products are determined by the temperature of the experiment and the amount of time it takes for the reaction to occur. At room temperature, approximately 30% of the product is magnesium methoxide, 15% is hydrogen gas, and 45% is magnesium hydroxide. Activating energy determines how much product is produced at a given temperature; at higher temperatures more product will be formed than at lower temperatures. This chemical can be used as a precursor for other chemicals due to its resonance mass transfer properties. In addition, 4-methoxybutan-2-one can be used as a starting material for organic synthesis reactions due
