Methyl 5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylate is a hybrid molecule with two different functionalities. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of bacterial DNA gyrase, which is an enzyme that maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA, and therefore may be useful as an anti-tuberculosis agent. Methyl 5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylate also has affinity for the h3 receptor, which is involved in the modulation of neurotransmission in the brain. This hybrid molecule is a pyridine derivative that can be synthesized from furan by reaction with isoxazole, and was found to have a blood brain barrier penetration activity.
