Methyl 5-bromo-4-oxopentanoate (5BO) is a solvent that is used in the synthesis of other organic compounds. It can be synthesized from trifluoroacetic acid and squamous carcinoma. The compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of squamous carcinoma cells by interfering with their ability to synthesize proteins. This effect was observed through immunohistochemical staining and model studies. The uptake of 5BO into the cell was inhibited by β-unsaturated ketones, which may be a possible therapeutic target for this compound.
