3-Methylenecyclobutane-1-carbonitrile is a synthetic compound that has a skeleton that is related to the chemical structure of nucleosides. 3-Methylenecyclobutane-1-carbonitrile is metabolized by hydrolysis, leading to the formation of methylcytosine and benzoic acid. 3-Methylenecyclobutane-1-carbonitrile has shown anti-HCV activity against Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) genotype 1a in cell culture models. This compound inhibits the replication of HCV RNA by binding to the viral RNA polymerase, which prevents transcription and replication of viral RNA. It also binds to DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis, as well as causing G2/M arrest in infected cells.
