- Benzene, 1-(2-methoxyethoxy)-4-nitro-
1-(2-methoxyethoxy)-4-nitrobenzene (MEOE) is an alkali metal sensor that responds to the presence of ethylene glycol. MEOE has shown a high level of selectivity for ethylene glycol and ionic liquid vapors, as it does not respond to other alkali metal vapors or non-polar organic solvents. The colorimetric response is due to the formation of a nitroso group at the 1 position on the benzene ring, which interacts with oxygen in air to form a red radical cation. MEOE also shows nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) responses that can be used to differentiate between different types of alkali metals. In addition, 1-(2-methoxyethoxy)-4-nitrobenzene can be used as a solid-state sensor for ethylene gas.
