Methyl 4-methoxypicolinate (MMPA) is a synthetic compound that can be synthesized using a cross-coupling reaction. MMPA is an intermediate in the synthesis of picolinic acid, which is an important heterocycle in the metabolism of pyridinium compounds. This process begins with the demethylation of methyl 4-methoxypicolinate to form methylamine and methylpyridinium. The methylamine reacts with methylpyridinium to form methyl 4-hydroxypicolinate and methoxyacetic acid. The hydrolysis of methyl 4-hydroxypicolinate yields picolinic acid and pyruvic acid.
