Methyl 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)acetate (MHA) is a reactive compound that can be used to treat cancer cells. MHA has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in pancreatic cancer and lymphocytic leukemia. MHA also has an important role in the synthesis of oxadiazoles, which are often used as anti-cancer drugs. MHA can be synthesized by reacting phenol with acetone using a protonation reaction. The asymmetric synthesis of MHA is based on the dihedral angle between an arene and a methacrolein molecule. This reaction product is then hydrogen bonded to another arene molecule, which produces an oxadiazole.
