3-Methyl-5-nitropyridin-2-ol is a heteroaromatic compound that reacts with nitric acid to form 3-methyl-5-(nitrosomethyl)pyridinium nitrate. This compound is an electrophilic factor that reacts with nucleophiles such as the conjugate acid of amines, thiols, and alcohols. Nitration of 3-methyl-5-(nitrosomethyl)pyridinium nitrate yields 3-methylpyridine 2,3,-dinitrochloride. The kinetics of this reaction were studied under various conditions at pH 7.0 and 37 °C.
The rate constant for the first order reaction was found to be 0.04 min−1 at pH 7.0 and in the presence of phosphate buffer (pH 7.0).
