The salt of 2-(N-methyloleamido)acetic acid is a fatty acid that is an effective adsorbent for the removal of fatty acids from wastewater. The mechanism of this process is adsorption, which involves the binding of the fatty acids to the surface of magnetic particles. This binding is achieved by ionic attraction and hydrogen bonding. Adsorption occurs when there is a greater concentration of fatty acids on the surface than in solution. The amount of 2-(N-methyloleamido)acetic acid needed to remove 90% of the initial weight of organic matter is determined by measuring the dry weight after drying at 105°C for 1 hour. In animal experiments, 2-(N-methyloleamido)acetic acid has been shown to be as effective as pergolide mesylate and it has a better chemical stability than cationic surfactants.
