Methyl 4-bromothiophene-2-carboxylate is a dehydrohalogenated mesomeric quinolinium compound with a fluorescence emission maximum at 421 nm. It has been found to be an intermediate in the synthesis of betaines. In addition, it has been used to synthesize carboxylates and chlorides. Methyl 4-bromothiophene-2-carboxylate is also known to be a metabolite of malignant cells that can be used as a biomarker for pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis, as well as being an alkylating agent.
