Methyl 4-(4-aminophenyl)butanoate is a synthetic chemical that inhibits the growth of cells by disrupting the process of cellular metabolism. It may be used to treat cancer or other diseases in which cells grow rapidly. Methyl 4-(4-aminophenyl)butanoate has been shown to inhibit the production of histones and deacetylase, which are proteins that regulate gene transcription and activity, in human adenocarcinoma cells. The mechanism of action for this drug is not entirely clear, but it is thought to inhibit cell growth by inhibiting propionate metabolism. This drug also has a toxic effect on bacteria and may be used as an antibiotic.
