5-Methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one is a hydrogenation reduction product of 5-methoxyindole and has been synthesized by the addition of a chloroformate to an alkene. This compound has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against the enzyme cholesteryl ester hydrolase. The absolute configuration was determined by X-ray diffraction data and is homochiral. It is an analog of naphthol, a biologically active compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of compounds such as naphthylacetic acid and naphthohydroquinone. The bioassay showed that this compound is a potent inhibitor with an IC50 value of 5 μM.
