2-Methyl-1-naphthol is a bioactive chemical that is an intermediate in the synthesis of phenothiazine drugs. It forms as a reaction product of a hydroxy group and an aromatic ring. It can be isolated from reactions involving copper chloride in organic solvents or from reactions involving carbon sources such as acetone, ethanol, and toluene. The 2-methyl-1-naphthol reacts with other substances to produce the desired product. The reaction mechanism for 2-methyl-1-naphthol is not well understood; however, it has been shown that steric interactions between the methyl group and the naphthalene ring may play a role in the rate of reaction.
2-Methyl-1-naphthol also has thermal expansion properties that are similar to those of pluronic p123, which may make it useful in polymer synthesis.
