Methyl 6-methoxynicotinate is an unsubstituted, chlorinated, methoxide compound. It is a colorless liquid that smells like almonds and has a bitter taste. Methyl 6-methoxynicotinate reacts with acetal and dichloromethyl groups in the presence of base to give methyl trichloromethyl ethers. This reaction can be reversed by heating with acid to give the original compounds. The methyl group in this molecule can be shifted to the right or left by reacting with an alkali metal such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. These reactions will attack the chlorinated carbon atom, replacing it with hydrogen or an alkali metal ion.
