Description

4-Methoxy-7-azaindole is an antiretroviral drug that inhibits the reverse transcriptase of the human immunodeficiency virus. This drug has been shown to be active against a number of human pathogens, including HIV, Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 and 2, and variola virus. It has also been shown to increase the levels of CD4+ T cells in HIV infected patients. 4-Methoxy-7-azaindole prevents viral replication by inhibiting the synthesis of viral DNA and RNA. The drug binds to the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which is necessary for viral replication. 4-Methoxy-7-azaindole also blocks the protein integrase, which is needed for viral DNA integration into the host cell's DNA.
