4-Methyl-5-nitrobenzene-1,3-diamine (MNBD) is a nitro compound that can be used as an antibacterial agent. It has been shown to have good activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. MNBD inhibits microbial metabolism by binding to the dinucleotide phosphate of bacterial cells, thereby blocking the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines. The nitro group in MNBD may also cause cytotoxicity through its ability to react with cellular amine groups, leading to genotoxic effects. The carbonyl group in MNBD reacts with glutathione and other thiols, which may lead to oxidative stress or inhibition of glutamate dehydrogenase. MNBD binds to DNA polymerase and prevents DNA synthesis from occurring.
