4-(Methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzoic acid is an activated fatty acid that reacts with phosphotungstic acid to form a brown precipitate. This reaction is used in the analysis of organic compounds and can be used as a simple and rapid analytical method for wastewater treatment. 4-(Methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzoic acid also reacts with nucleophiles such as hydrochloric acid, producing nitro groups that are oxidized by the addition of an oxidation catalyst. The nitro group then undergoes reduction to form a hydroxylamine, which has been shown to have genotoxic effects in certain test systems. Chronic exposure may lead to metabolic changes, including increased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
