Methyl 2-bromothiazole-5-carboxylate is a thiourea that is used as a precursor to other compounds. It can be synthesized by the diazotization of ethyl 5-chlorothiazole-2-carboxylate and bromination with NBS. Methyl 2-bromothiazole-5-carboxylate has been shown to react with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of UV light to produce methylene chloride, an important industrial solvent.
