4-Methoxynicotinic acid is a potential inhibitor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). It is an analogue of nicotinic acid, which is a glycolytic inhibitor. The activity of 4-methoxynicotinic acid is similar to that of nicotinamide and nicotinamide riboside. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Biological activity may be due to its ability to inhibit glycolysis by blocking the conversion of glucose into pyruvate.
