Methyl 1H-benzo[d]imidazole-4-carboxylate is a reactant that has been used in the synthesis of a number of analogs. It can be prepared by reacting benzimidazole with methyl chloroformate in the presence of an acid catalyst. Methyl 1H-benzo[d]imidazole-4-carboxylate is a base catalyst and enhances the yield of reactions involving benzylic substrates. The reactivity, substituent preferences, and potency of this compound are similar to those found for benzimidazoles. Methyl 1H-benzo[d]imidazole-4-carboxylate has been used to synthesize antiviral drugs such as HIV inhibitors.
