4-Methylpicolinaldehyde is a fluorescent probe used in vitro to measure the activity of acetylases. It has been shown to be potent inhibitor of cellular acetylases, such as histone and p53 acetylases, with a linear response over a wide range of concentrations. 4-Methylpicolinaldehyde binds to nucleic acids through its pyridine ring, which is then excreted by cells. This fluorescence probe has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties, inducing apoptosis in cancer cells without affecting normal cells.
