6-Methylpyrazine-2-carbonitrile is a trimethylsilyl derivative of pyrazine that is used in the synthesis of n-oxides. It has high regioselectivity, substituent, and reactivity. The reaction mixture consists of acetonitrile, triethylamine, and cyanide. 6-Methylpyrazine-2-carbonitrile reacts with chloro or cyanide to give the corresponding substituted pyrazines. The yields are good and the product can be purified by distillation using diethoxyphosphoryl as an extractant.
