2-(1-Methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)acetic acid (2MI) is a molecule that belongs to the category of biologically active compounds. It is an inhibitor of histamine methyltransferase, and thus has been shown to be clinically relevant in the diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome. 2MI has also been shown to inhibit the activity of other enzymes, such as dipeptidyl peptidase IV, which results in high levels of histidine in urine samples. 2MI has also been shown to have a protective effect against ischemic brain damage by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species and increasing blood flow.
