The structure of 4-methyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol exhibits hydrogen bonding interactions with chloride ions, which are present in the crystal lattice. The compound is acidic, with an endpoint pH of 3.9 to 4.2 and an aldehyde group at the end of the molecule. 4-Methyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol is also used as a reagent for the synthesis of isoprene from 2,3 butanediol, mediated by dehydrating agents such as sulfuric acid or phosphorus pentoxide. This compound has been shown to be capable of forming supramolecular structures
