Product Information
- 4-Oxazolecarboxylic Acid, 5-Methyl-, Methyl Ester
Methyl 5-methyloxazole-4-carboxylate is an acid hydrazide that is used as a precursor to thiosemicarbazide. It is prepared by the reaction of formic acid and hydrazine in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide, or by refluxing methanol with chlorine in the presence of iron filings. Methyl 5-methyloxazole-4-carboxylate can be converted to thiosemicarbazide or methyl 4,5-dimethyloxazole-2-carboxylate. Methyl 5-methyloxazole-4-carboxylate has been reassigned from the family of oxychlorides to that of hydrazides. The synthesis and properties are similar to other members of this family, such as methyl 3,4,5,6,-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene carboxylate.
