- 6-Methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin
6-Methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine is a molecule that is used as a chemical alkylation agent. It has been shown to be cytotoxic against hepatoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo, and also inhibits replication of hepatitis B virus in cell culture. The mechanism of action is not yet known but may be related to the ability of 6-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine to form covalent bonds with cellular DNA. 6-Methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine can react with anions such as chloride ion or sulfate ion to form an anion radical. This reaction is reversible and the product can then react with other molecules to form adducts that can be measured by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy.
