Description:

2-Methoxyterephthalic acid is a monomer used in the preparation of polyester. It is synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2-chloroterephthalic acid, phenol, and biphenyl. The synthesis begins with the formation of a palladium acetate catalyst. The reaction proceeds to form an intermediate that is then hydrolyzed to release the desired product. This process is also known as transesterification. 2-Methoxyterephthalic acid has been investigated for use as a fluorescence probe for thermally induced phase changes in liquid crystal compositions due to its high solubility in both organic solvents and water vapor. It has also been shown to be soluble in the boron nitride matrix, which can be used as an electrical insulator or semiconductor material.
