Methyl 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylate is a synthetic chemical that was first synthesized in the 1950s. It is used as a reagent to oxidize osmium tetroxide and chloride. Natural sources of methyl 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylate include imidazole, periodate, dehydroisolongistrobine, and magnesium. Methyl 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylate is converted to isolongistrobine by reaction with vinyl chloride gas. Isolongistrobine is then converted to isomacrorine by reaction with osmium tetroxide. Isomacrorine can be further oxidized to form tetroxide or osmium dioxide.
